Happy New Year!

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Xmas. I know that my husband and I did. We always enjoy going to our friends Ken and Jeri’s for dinner so many friends are there to celebrate the holidays and the feasting is amazing. I so love my brother-in-law Greg’s prime rib… it all but melts in your mouth. Everyone brings something to share with everyone else and no one is shy about getting seconds.

It was once again a very Doctor Who Xmas in this house. I got the hubster a new bathrobe that looks like the 4th Doctors jacket and scarf and he got me one that is the TARDIS. Lol He also got me a new blanket that is the TARDIS. Though I think my favorite gift from him is my new Kitchenaid mix master! I will finally be able to make my grandma’s sugar cookies! I also received some wonderful gifts from my inlaws a beautiful ceramic bread pan and a Bruins hockey jersey are the two favorites. Yes, I enjoy hockey and yes I am a Boston Bruins fan—so is my husband. We also enjoy going to watch the local team the Everett Silvertips play when we can.

I know that some of you are probably wondering why I would not have just made them any ways. Well, there was a time when I was a teenager that MY mother had the brilliant idea of saving time and doubling the batch for these sugar cookies. We almost killed her mix master doing that. It caused us to hand mix this dough and that is just something I do not want to ever do again. Doing that once was more than enough for me.

The next holiday is New Years. I truly hope that everyone has a safe and enjoyable time in whatever manner you choose to celebrate. Please remember to drive safely if you go out and about and may 2015 bring everyone joy, contentment and blessings.

Happy Winter Solstice Everyone! In four more days it will be Xmas and I wish each and every one of you a wonderful joy filled day.

There is a huge controversy every year now it seems regarding what people should say, whether it should be Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays. Personally I say Happy Xmas and Merry New Year… reason everyone is usually happy at Xmas and very merry at New Years due to imbibing large quantities of spirits. lol

In regards to which one SHOULD be used… well don’t you think there are more important things to focus on? How about focusing on the sweet sentiment behind the words instead of on the actual words used? How about saying thank you to the person wishing you happiness instead of being offended in the manner of which the happiness was wished?

So many people see to focus on finding things to be offended by these days instead of just being happy and thankful for the good things in their lives. The world would be a more pleasant place to live if more people would start focusing on the good things more than on the bad. I know there will always be bad and even downright horrid things in the world. But that does not mean that people have to go out of their way to find things to bicker over that are just trivial… don’t you think?

I’ve asked a number of different people that say “Happy Holidays” to people and most of them have said they say it that way so that no matter what the persons faith is that they are saying it won’t be offended because it does not favor one version of the holiday season over any other i.e. not favoring a particular faith over any other one. And I love that answer it is thoughtful and makes sense to me.

I have friends that span a great variety of faiths and some of them do not like hearing ‘Merry Christmas’ because they are Jewish or some form of Pagan. But they focus on the honest sweet sentiment BEHIND the words instead of on the words. I have quite a number of friends that are Christian and a number of them take great offense to anything words used besides the ‘Merry Christmas’. While others are just fine with whatever words are used because they are appreciating the sentiment.

So I say to all of you…

HAPPY XMAS AND MERRY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is up to you to appreciate the good wishes and sentiment behind those words or not.

Blessed Be.

Holiday prepping & questions

PictureCranberry orange bread.
Trying to get the house ready for Xmas, get the cards filled out and sent, have not done that for years, and trying to get the things together that need to be mailed out to family. Sadly I am losing the battle between the full-time job and the husband that just needs to be allowed to relax on his days off things are not getting done as quickly as I would like. *sigh* Oh well a happy husband is far more important than any of the other items listed in my opinion. lol

I will be trying out a couple of new recipes this holiday season for some bread and a cake. One thing that I really miss making is my grandma’s sugar cookies. I don’t currently have a stand mixer and for this particular recipe one is really needed for mixing it together. One funny thing about this cookie recipe is that it should never be doubled even if you have a stand mixer. My mom and I learned this the hard way about 20 years ago… we all but killed her stand mixer and it’s one that they don’t make anymore. You know the type the ones that work through anything no matter what and keep going because they were made to keep working.

I was wondering do any of you have special recipes that you try to make every year or is there one that you wish you but for whatever reason can’t? I’m not asking for the recipe itself just the name if there is one. Is there a particular dish that always makes you smile when you see it laid out with all the other goodies for holiday consumption? It doesn’t have to be a treat it could be something like a ham, specialty mashed potatoes, yams candied or not.

There is one thing that I truly do not miss seeing and that is the jello with the shredded carrots or the jello with the fruit cocktail in it. Those are two dishes that I was  never able to wrap my head around as a kid and as an adult I still do not understand the fascination that some people have for them.
