To Research or Not To Research...

PicturePlaces like: The Internet Guide To Scotland have wonderful information
As a reader I am one of those that will look places up if they are supposed to be set in a real world setting. I find it very disappointing that some authors will just completely make things up because they do not want to take the time to do a little research.
Now, don’t get me wrong I’m not saying research is easy by any means! I myself am having a very fun time researching Scotland during the last 1920’s… NOT. It is rather challenging to get things accurate and I am doing my best to have things like that correct even though it is for a Forever Fey story.
Things like certain roads that are in place now or bridges were just tracks back then or you had to take a ferry! I don’t want to have my characters going over a bridge that was not in place until 20 years later than what the setting is for them. This is where I get frustrated as a reader with some authors.
Places where there are standing stones in Scotland, England, Wales and such is NOT going to change… no one is going to move those.
Why not choose one of those locations for the scene in your book especially if it is going back in time—quite far back I might add. Or if you are going to mention a castle why make one up? Places like The Internet Guide to Scotland have wonderful information about Standing Stones and where they are all over Scotland.
As a reader do you prefer places that are in real locations to be actual places or does it not make a difference? Please let me know in the comments or send me an email with your thoughts on this.

Good questions! I really enjoy reading about lush, well-researched historical settings—but research is incredibly intimidating to me and, frankly, quite boring. As a writer I'd rather make a place up, but as a reader I really love accurate renderings of real places, especially if I know them!

Research can be very intimidating especially if you are trying to be as accurate as possible. It only has to be boring if you look at it that way. I go into it thinking of how it is going to help enrich the story I am working on and have found interesting facts that I've used in other stories or will be using. lol

As a reader I appreciate an author who goes through the effort to research information, but don't actually care either way. I have always been a huge fan of fantasy and science fiction to to the point that small/specific details like that don't take away from my ultimate enjoyment of the book. I can understand where you're coming from; it just has never been a pet peeve or annoyance to me.
