Joys of Scanning Things

15/9/2013

Oh the joys of scanning things... especially when they have to be done by hand.
Phase One
575 pages once all said and done for the manuscript about David Callender Campbell. Working on that while doing other things around the house as well made the scanning take three days before it was completed and ready for the next phase.
Phase Two
Placing 575 images into a Publisher file can be rather daunting. Having a program update bugger up your files makes things take even longer. Nothing like being on page 411 and attempting to get page 412 to load and it all go south. Had to get Microsoft Customer Service on the phone... yes I just heard you all groan at the thought of that. Trust me I was not happy especially when after being on hold for almost a half hour then getting placed on hold again for another ten minutes just to have them disconnect the call. Needless to say I did make my displeasure known when I called back the second time. Long story for this part of the saga short after granting remote access to a Microsoft Tech person for them to get into my computer two and half hours later all my Publisher files were working as they should EXCEPT for the one regarding this manuscript. lmao Yes you did read that correctly all but the extremely important one were able to be saved.
Phase Three
Start the Publisher file all over again lol. If you all have not yet tried to put that many pages into one file my recommendation is don't. At least not if you are wanting to save it as a PDF as well. Every time I attempted to save the 575 page Pub file as a PDF it timed out stating there was not enough room to complete the action... no matter where I was trying to save it.
Phase Four
Cut the Pub file in half and try saving again. YAY! Houston we have lift-off. So I now have three different Pub files one that is the 575 pages the other two are 288 and 287 pages. The two smaller ones both saved as PDF files. We are now ready for the next phase.
Phase Five
Give the flashdrive containing all these wonderful files to Karla and Tony Locke of Armchair ePublishing. Tony will then with all of his wonderful programs and machines turn the PDF's into Word Docs that I will be able to go in and edit as if I typed all these pages up myself. I know that I have said it before but I'm going to say it again. The people of Armchair ePublishing ROCK!!!! Karla I can't wait to see you this Saturday and hand off this little project to you and Tony.
Then
Phase Six
Once the PDF's are converted I will be going through the Word Doc page by page and looking at the physical pages of the manuscript for doing to the edits that will inevitably be there waiting for attention.
